The Light of Christ

Reading: 2 Nephi 2:5; Moroni 7:16; “Born Again,” President James E. Faust, Ensign, May 2001;  LDS.org Gospel Topics: Light of Christ

Through Jesus Christ, we all have the ability to distinguish between right and wrong.  And, when I say “we all” I mean everybody, everywhere.  In 2 Nephi 2:5 it says:

And men are instructed sufficiently that they know good from evil.

In the church we call this the “Light of Christ.”  In the general population it is known as a conscience.  Basically, it is the little part of us that tells us that something seems wrong, or right.  Some people don’t listen to it, but everybody has it.

In Moroni 7:16 we learn more about the Spirit of Christ:

For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God.

The Light of Christ is different from the Holy Ghost.  Elder Faust explains:

Many outside the Church have received revelation by the power of the Holy Ghost, convincing them of the truth of the gospel. Through this power sincere investigators acquire a testimony of the Book of Mormon and the principles of the gospel before baptism. However, administrations of the Holy Ghost are limited without receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost.  Those who possess the gift of the Holy Ghost after baptism and confirmation can receive more light and testimony. This is because the gift of the Holy Ghost is “a permanent witness and higher endowment than the ordinary manifestation of the Holy Spirit.” It is the higher endowment because the gift of the Holy Ghost can act as “a cleansing agent to purify a person and sanctify him from all sin.”

I find it heartening to know that everyone has the Light of Christ to guide them.  There are many, many good people throughout history and even today who became very good people by following the Light of Christ.  Since I am blessed to also have the gift of the Holy Ghost and modern revelation, I feel it puts a greater responsibility on me to live up to the knowledge and light that I have been given.

Today I am going to spend a little extra time on reading my scriptures, in order to take greater advantage of the Light of Christ.

Have you seen the Light of Christ at work in your life, or in the lives of people you know?
