Optimism and Prophecy

Reading: 1 Nephi 14

Prophecies do not usually figure big into my testimony about our church.  While I have a strong testimony of prayer, personal revelation, the Atonement, and other more personal aspects of the gospel, I really just don’t think much about the prophecies you find in scripture.

1 Nephi chapter 14 is full of prophecies about what is going on right now.  It talks about the church spreading across the world, as is going on right now, and how people will have to choose between the true church and the “great and abominable church,” which I take to symbolize everything that is not of God.

So, the thing that stood out to me most in this chapter is the promise that this time the church will not fail, and will roll forward until the second coming of Christ.  In verse 2 it says:

They shall be numbered among the seed of thy father; yea, they shall be numbered among the house of Israel; and they shall be a blessed people upon the promised land forever; they shall be no more brought down into captivity; and the house of Israel shall no more be confounded.

Another thing that is said over and over again in this chapter is that it up to the people in this time to choose.  They can either choose the church of God or the church of the devil.  In verse 7 it says:

For the time cometh, saith the Lamb of God, that I will work a great and a marvelous work among the children of men; a work which shall be everlasting, either on the one hand or on the other—either to the convincing of them unto peace and life eternal, or unto the deliverance of them to the hardness of their hearts and the blindness of their minds unto their being brought down into captivity, and also into destruction, both temporally and spiritually, according to the ecaptivity of the devil, of which I have spoken.

So, continuing from where I started, I found that prophecies can be a great source of comfort if taken correctly.  Although there are many bad things going on right now, and many more bad things will happen, I can rest in the faith of knowing God will prevail.  It is up to me to choose the right side.

Today I am going to just think a bit and come up with other prophecies that help me to be more optimistic and write a short list in my journal.

Not all prophecies are positive, but they all show God’s power over the devil.  What effect has reading prophecy had on you?
